My Soul Looks Back and Wonder How I Got Over
April 2 - June 20, 2021
This exhibition is a thoughtful visual dialogue that uses art to examine how the pervasiveness of a collective past informs our present, and how the persistence of hope and collective purpose positively redeems us to our present and our future. Robert Terrance "Skip" Hill and Letitia Huckaby use collage and fiber for this specific body of work commemorating the centennial of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. The title of the exhibition is a refrain from the classic Gospel song “How I Got Over,” composed and published in 1951 by Clara Ward.
Building on the Body: Identity, Materials, Jewelry
August 2 - September 22, 2019
Architecture is often associated with the industrial construction of buildings; however, in Building on the Body fifteen designers from Asia, Europe, and the United States come together to challenge this concept. Using bodies as a foundation, the designers create visual stories that often reflect the individual wearer’s urban identities. The artists use industrial materials often used in construction, from concrete and steel to corrugated cardboard, to celebrate the human body and the expression of one’s identity through ornamentation.
Accidental Vestiges: Beth Lipman
April 5 - May 26, 2019
Excess and history come together in Beth Lipman’s astonishing glass work. Lipman looks back to the tradition of Still Life through the lens of contemporary consumption. Mundane items from food to books are immortalized in crystal clear glass, revealing the lasting influence of the objects with which we surround ourselves and ultimately acting as artifacts of the society within which we live. Lipman describes her work by saying, "The hand-sculpted glass compositions are portraits of individuals and our society through inanimate objects."
2020 Digital Content
The 108 Contemporary team premiered digital content within two weeks after the gallery closed due to COVID-19. This initiative allowed the nonprofit to remain connected with the community during a five month-long pandemic closure.
Supporting Oklahoma craft artists is central to 108 Contemporary's mission. Weekly video chats on Zoom allowed member artists to connect with staff members and one another while discussing how COVID-19 was affecting their artistic practice.
Member Meetups
